A large uchishiki dated 1878 on the back (in Japanese 'kanji' characters), featuring peony embroidered appliqu�s on a red bast-fiber background. The white lining is a thicj silk damask fabric. Fair condition, with a number of holes and stains (largest of which can be seen in the adjoining images). 78" x 49". Peonies in Japan are a symbol of nobility. The Buddhist monk Kong Hai introduced tree peonies to Japan in the 8th century for medicinal purposes.
